Is Crooked I Lost?

If you follow West Coast rap at all, you’ve heard of Crooked I and his Hip Hop Weekly series. For the last year, Crooked I has been releasing freestyles over industry beats. If you haven’t heard any of these, I highly recommend you clear a couple of hours and head over to the DubCnn Hip hop weekly archive.

A novel and successful marketing concept, Cooked I has really raised his profile among rap fans with this series. Each Wednesday, people know to head to their favorite website and check for a new Crooked I song. It’s not like he half assed the songs either. Many times they ended up being better than the originals.

As we approach week 52, I’m left to wonder: What’s next for Crooked I?

Are fans going to be pleasantly surprised with the announcement of a concrete release date for an album, or are we going to get a more nebulous “We’ve almost signed a contract, look out for the album in the third quarter” type statement?

Fans have stuck with Crooked I for a VERY long time and he has some of the most devoted groupies fans on the internet. Reading message boards and talking to people, I’ve seen a running sentiment that fans are becoming fed up not hearing a single on the radio or seeing an album on the shelves.

If Crooked isn’t careful, these fans which have stuck by him through thick and thin will move on. Yes the Hip Hop Weekly tracks were amazing, but people want to see what Crooked can bring with an album. What types of beats will he pick? What type of flows will he use? Who will be featured? If Crooked doesn’t release some sort of information soon, I’m afariad people might pack up and find another artist to follow.

I can only hope that with the hard work Crooked I has put into the hip hop weekly series, he has a follow up plan to capitalize on its success.

  1. [...] but feel like it’s missing something, namely a solid release date for Crooked’s album. We’ve discussed Crooked’s plans in the past, and I’m very disappointed that there is no concrete information on his album release date. [...]
