Lessons From Young Buck and Ras Kass

So I was listening to that Young Buck breakdown and came away with several important lessons for artists. The Internet is a double edged sword. Sure it opens up a whole new avenue for artists to promote themselves, but it also makes any embarrassing moments reach a much wider audience and the damage done to careers lasts much longer.

Take for example the Game/Ras Kass episode. I used to enjoy hearing new Ras Kass songs. I wasn’t really a fan, but I recognized his obvious microphone skills and enjoyed some of his music. Fast forward to today: Every time I hear Ras Kass on a track, I imagine him with that black eye and the dude spitting and spelling things out with bullets on Youtube. It’s obvious to anybody who saw the video with an unbiased eye, that Ras Kass did horrible harm to his career with that video.

The Ras Kass example brings up an important point. The internet moves at a rapid pace, and that makes responding to rumors a delicate process.  Either artists respond too quickly and end up looking silly, or respond too late and the rumor has ingrained itself into the public’s mind as truth.

There’s no sure fire formula on how to respond to the rumors on the internet. One thing I’d recommend to upcoming artists is to take a breather and think things through before making any sort of comment or response.  Look at the situation objectively and game through potential responses to your response. Think chess, not checkers.
