R.I.P. Johnny “J” Jackson

Damn it. Hate having to do posts like this. Over the weekend, producer Johny “J” died of an apparent suicide in the L.A. county jail. Thoughts and prayers go out to Johnny J’s family and friends. His music will be remembered for a long time to come and he had a positive impact on many lives that will continue beyond his death. I’ve included a few of my favorite tracks below.

Monsters Ink Delayed, Fuck G Malone to Drop in its Place

G Malone and Blu Divisions Monsters INK was supposed to drop on October 7th 2008. Turns outs plans have changed a bit and it’s been delayed to a later date. The plan is to introdce the Blu Division roster to the public after Malone’s album The Beach Cruiser drops in November.

The homie Styles over at RapTalk.net let people know that the Fuck G Malone mixtape will be dropping in it’s place. If you missed it, we dropped the first single last week which you can check out here.

I’ve gotta say I like the way this is playing out a bit better. I’ve been anticipating the Fuck G Malone tape since our interview in May. I think that dropping two tapes before the album might risk giving too much music away for free. This way, once The Beach Cruiser drops, I think all eyes will be on the Blu Division tape. Only issue I see is they’ll be dropping a Halloween themed tape around Christmas, but Styles says the tape is strong enough to overcome it.

Deal of the Week: Dubb Union for $5.99

If you haven’t picked up the new Dubb Union album yet, I’ve got some good news for you. Both iTunes and Amazon.com are offering the album for $5.99. Thats the price of a value meal at McDonalds and is a real steal for one of the better albums to come out this year. The digital release also doesn’t have the skips that the retail version has so head on over to Amazon or iTunes and pick up this album.

Bishop Lamont speaks on Grow Up “Mistake”

LA Weekly recently wrote an article about the resurgence of hip hop on the West Coast. It’s a great article and ou should peep the whole thing by clicking here. I’ve been saying it for a while that we’re doing much better and it’s great to see mainstream outlets pick up on the fact. One interesting tidbit came from the Bishop Lamont section of the article. Turns out Interscope was sending out cease-and-desist letters to radio stations playing Grow Up because they were afraid that it would take shine away from Detox. Writer Jeff Weiss has it right when he says:

“During the past decade, the major labels have treated the digital age with the brutish, clumsy idiocy of Lennie pawing a puppy in Of Mice and Men. But few examples are more brazenly buffoonish than Interscope’s recent decision to kill the Dr. Dre–produced “Grow Up,” the debut single from Aftermath-signed Bishop Lamont, from Carson, California, just as the track began to enter heavy rotation at local urban-radio powerhouse Power 106.”

Seems like a waste of a great song, but I guess on the upside it means that Detox is actually going to be dropping soon.

Ya Boy - Right Now

Infra Red
just sent us over a CDQ, NO DJ version of “Right Now” from the latest Ya Boy Mixtape The Bay Area Bully. Over a strong and driving beat that features Infra Red’s signature sound, Ya Boy brings his lyrical “A” Game. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Infra Red and Ya Boy are a superb duo. Infra Red has produced some of Ya Boy’s most memorable tracks and they rarely disappoint when collaborating. Having a signature and unique sound is increasingly important in today’s music climate and Ya Boy and Infra Red have it down to an art.
