Suga Free and Hyphy?

So Styles over at RapTalk recently uploaded a track called My Dice from Suga Free’s upcoming album: Smell my finger. It’s a huge departure from Suga Free’s post DJ Quik catalog sounding more hyphy than anything else. Reaction has been mixed on the forums, but that’s to be expected. I dig the new track and I’m suddenly excited to see what Suga Free has cooked up for his next album.

I’ve had one major problem with the Suga Free albums he’s put out since he split ways with DJ Quik. All the music Suga Free has been rapping over sounds like other producers making DJ Quik style beats. Sure the formula of the music was the same, but let’s face it: DJ Quik is in a league of his own. Don’t get me wrong, the production wasn’t bad, it’s just hard to hear Suga Free over non DJ Quik beats. That’s why I’m so excited about this song.

Suga Free went in a COMPLETELY different direction with My Dice. It’s a radical departure from anything he’s been doing lately and it sounds both innovative and fresh. Sounding MUCH more sober and not so out there, Suga Free raps over an extremely creative beat using the sound of shaking dice for percussion. Changing the sound of his voice, it almost sounds like a pimped out version of the Ying Yang whisper track. That’s not a bad thing at all and the song works on many levels.

Suga free is one of my favorite artists. He’s JUST behind Too $hort in “Fuck a bitch” music. If you’ve ever been wronged by a trick tramp skeeza, “Fuck a bitch” music is like therapy for your soul. If Suga Free reinvents himself on Smell My Finger and creates a style all his own, it could be his biggest post-DJ Quik album to date.

Suga Free and hyphy sound like an unlikely combination, but this song bangs. If My Dice is any indication of how the album is shaping up, I’m excited. It’s high time for Suga Free to grow as an artist and move in his own direction.

One Response to “Suga Free and Hyphy?”

  1. Hot track… it doesn’t compare to anything from the “Street Gospel” days but it’s pretty good. I wish him and Quik would just stop beefing and make music, they made magic together.

Quik’s new group with Snoop and Teddy Riley could be good though.
