West Coast Artists Need Business Plans
I love starting businesses. It’s my hobby. Some work, some don’t. You would be surprised how much money you can get selling a fledgling business with potential. One thing this has taught me is the importance of a business plan. Those who fail to plan, should plan to fail.
I see a lot of talent in West Coast Rap. The New West has just as much, if not more talent than the rest of the United States. At the same time, I don’t see a lot of direction out West. I see local rappers tying to become national; I see rappers with national appeal trying to be local. It’s a mixed up world out here and when things tend to not work out; you see anger and then beef. That’s not good for artists and it’s damn sure not good for the coast as a whole.
So what to do? I think rappers out West should have all write business plans for their careers. What are you looking to get out of the Rap world? Do you want to sell mixtapes through myspace or do you want to tour Europe? Do you have the funding to achieve your goals? How are you going to build your fanbase? Are you going to focus on online promotion or shoot for the radio? If you’re going to hit the radio, where do you start?
These are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself and answering with your business plan. Once you decide on where you want to take your career, then your next step is to lay out a series of steps to achieve your goals. I find it helps if you work backwards. Be detailed and please note that things can and will change so the document should be fluid.
I hope I’ve given artists to think about. Rap has a natural entrepreneurial spirit that’s unique to the genre. Name me one Rock/Pop artist that’s come up like Young Jeezy. You can’t! Take advantage of that and write a business plan for your career. Click here for info on writing a business plan with samples documents.
