Why Detox Is Coming Soon

“Detox is coming” has been Dre’s response to questions about his next album for the past six years. Along with Chinese Democracy, Detox is one of those albums that fans have been rabidly anticipating for years.  It’s become a running joke that the album will actually drop, but there are signs that Detox actually is coming.

First, Dre is putting out a set of headphones with Monster Cable called Beats By Dr. Dre. Announced at CES, the headphones are supposed to be out this June, and by all early reports, are supposed to be excellent. They are a bit pricey with a MSRP of $399, but I’m sure you’ll be able to find a deal somewhere ($25 off coupon with purchase of Detox?) To the Monster people: if you’re reading this, hit me up with a review copy of these headphones!

Secondly, Dre has partnered with Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd to market a line of beverages. Soon you’ll be drinking Dr Dre cognac and sparkling vodka.

Thirdly, Dre signed a multi-year deal with New Line Cinema to develop films for Dre’s newly formed film company Crucial films.

Fourthly, Dre looks like he’s gone from musician to professional body builder (no homo). I was shocked when I saw the Youtube of him from the 2007 MTV awards.

What does all this mean? I see Interscope and Dre laying the groundwork for the most advanced rap album ever with these merchandising deals. Could this simply be Dre diversifying his business ventures and getting in excellent shape? Sure. It DOES seem a bit more than sheer coincidence that after being fairly quiet in the public eye, Dre has announced these deals within the last three months.

If I were a betting man, I’d put money that Detox will be out by the end of the year. With these deals, we’re witnessing the first steps in what is bound to be a HUGE marketing plan for an album 8 plus years in the making.

    On the Wikipedia page for Detox, it’s said that the album is planned for a June 2008 release.

    Dre’s recent productions suck! All average and boring.
    Dre needs some inspiration. Needs to smoke sum chronic before he hits the studio or something. If Detox’s gonna be like his latest productions it’s gonna a big flop. Even tracks he did more than 10 years ago (like Phone Tap) sound more innovative than the recent tracks he did for Bishop.
